Environmental, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser
\nSyeda Rizwana Hasan emphasized the need for integrating environmental
\npolicies into agri-food systems during her address at the 8th IUCN Regional
\nConservation Forum.<\/p>\n
The forum, held in Bangkok today, brought together experts from across Asia
\nto discuss pressing environmental issues, according to a press release.<\/p>\n
She called for the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices, including
\norganic food production and reduced use of pesticides and chemical
\nfertilizers and support of local farming, and traditional farming by forest-
\ndependent Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a session titled “Transforming Agri-Food Systems: Integration of
\nEnvironmental Policies into Agri-Food Systems – Challenges and
\nOpportunities,” Rizwana highlighted the critical importance of aligning
\nagricultural practices with environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n
She pointed out that the current agri-food systems are one of the major
\ncontributors to environmental degradation, including deforestation, soil
\ndepletion, and water scarcity.<\/p>\n
“Integrating environmental policies into our agri-food systems is not just a
\nnecessity but a responsibility we must embrace,” she said.<\/p>\n
The challenges are significant, but the opportunities for creating a
\nsustainable future are even greater, Rizwana stated.<\/p>\n
Environment Adviser also discussed the specific challenges faced by countries
\nlike Bangladesh, where agricultural practices are deeply intertwined with the
\nlivelihoods of millions.<\/p>\n
She called for innovative policy solutions and greater regional cooperation
\nto address these issues effectively.<\/p>\n
The adviser, in a separate meeting with the DG, IUCN requested support in
\ndeveloping a progressive legal regime in Bangladesh on forest protection and
\nconservation, setting up a sanctuary for orphan elephants, and restoring the
\necological integrity of the Saint Martin Island.<\/p>\n
The DG assured of technical support in this regard alongside helping to find
