According to the organization, the overall deterioration of law and order has created a sense of insecurity and concern among the general public.<\/p>\n
In a press statement issued on Sunday (June 7), BCRS Chairman Zakir Hossain and Executive Director Sheikh Mohammad Tajul Islam presented the findings. They said that an analysis of crimes committed during the period reveals several alarming trends regarding the country’s law-and-order situation.
\nAccording to the report published by BCRS, a total of 1,142 murders were recorded across the country between January and April 2026. During the same period, there were 347 cases of abduction, 184 incidents of mugging, and 591 robberies. The number of cases related to violence against women and children reached 5,998. In addition, at least 118 children were reportedly victims of rape between January and May 20, a matter the organization described as deeply concerning for society.
\nThe organization stated that juvenile gang activities, drug-related crimes, extortion, land grabbing, and organized criminal activities are also on the rise in different parts of the country. As a result, uncertainty regarding public safety has increased among citizens. The report noted that criminal activities are expanding not only in urban centers but also in rural areas.
\nBCRS leaders said the statistics were compiled based on reports published in national newspapers, online media outlets, and field-level information collected by the organization. They claimed that the actual number of crimes could be even higher, as many incidents remain unreported due to social, family, or administrative reasons and are never officially recorded by police.
\nThe organization also expressed concern over the situation along the Bangladesh-India border. The statement noted that media reports frequently indicate attempts to push individuals into Bangladesh from India. Such incidents, BCRS said, raise concerns regarding border security, human rights, and regional stability. The organization believes that any form of irregular cross-border entry or forced push-in is linked to issues of international law and human rights and requires effective diplomatic communication and coordination between the authorities of both countries.
\nThe statement further emphasized the need for effective measures to control crime, strengthen the capacity of law enforcement agencies, end the culture of impunity, intensify anti-drug efforts, and enhance protection for women and children. It also called for stronger intelligence operations to combat abduction, mugging, extortion, and organized crime.
\nThe two leaders stated that protecting citizens’ lives and property and ensuring public safety are among the state’s fundamental responsibilities. They urged the government to take visible steps to improve law and order, bring criminals to justice swiftly, and restore public confidence. Otherwise, they warned, social instability, fear, and criminal activities may continue to increase.
\nBCRS called upon the government, law enforcement agencies, human rights organizations, the media, and civil society to work together to improve the overall law-and-order situation, protect human rights, and ensure border security. The organization believes that building a safe and humane society requires active participation from all stakeholders alongside the state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Staff Correspondent: The Bangladesh Civil Rights Society (BCRS) has claimed that incidents of murder, abduction, mugging, robbery, theft, and violence against women and children have increased at an alarming rate since the final period of the interim government and the beginning of the BNP-led government.
