BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the Awami League and democracy can never go together. He also stated that a BNP government is committed to ensuring freedom of the press.<\/p>\n

He made the remarks while addressing a discussion meeting as the chief guest on Tuesday (June 16) at the National Press Club. The event was jointly organized by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ).
\n\u201cBNP is not a revolutionary party; it is a liberal democratic party that embraces people from all walks of life,\u201d Mirza Fakhrul said.
\nHe stressed the need to reopen newspapers that have ceased publication. Referring to the government’s efforts to ensure press freedom, he expressed concern that many journalists are being dismissed by media owners for various reasons.
\nThe BNP Secretary General claimed that media freedom was comparatively greater whenever BNP was in power.
\nAlleging that propaganda is being spread against BNP and the government through social media, he said, \u201cA certain group has become active in spreading misinformation and propaganda. We must unite to resist these campaigns.\u201d
\nInformation and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan attended the event as a special guest. BFUJ Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury presented the keynote paper at the beginning of the program.
\nThe discussion was chaired by DUJ President Md. Shahidul Islam and moderated by Acting General Secretary Didarul Alam. Among others, Managing Director of the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust Bachir Jamal, National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia\u2019s former Press Secretary Maruf Kamal, and several journalist leaders addressed the gathering.
\nBFUJ Vice-Presidents Muhammad Khairul Bashar and AKM Mohsin, Organizing Secretary Erfanul Haque Nahid, Office Secretary Md. Abu Bakkar, and other journalist leaders also spoke at the event.
\nDuring the discussion, speakers demanded speedy justice for the murder of journalist couple Sagar-Runi and called for the introduction of a modern and appropriate wage structure for journalists.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
