Staff Correspondent: <\/strong>A meeting was held between the Minister for Labour and Employment, Ariful Haque Choudhury, and the Director-General (DG) of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Gilbert F. Houngbo, at the Minister\u2019s office at the secretariat in Dhaka yesterday. In a cordial atmosphere, fruitful discussions took place regarding the modernization of Bangladesh’s labor sector, labor law reforms, the creation of new employment, and the further strengthening of bilateral cooperation to ensure international labor standards.<\/p>\n

Welcoming the ILO Director-General to Bangladesh, labour minister Ariful Haque Choudhury has said that the current government is fully committed to protecting workers’ rights and ensuring a safe working environment. He noted that labor sector reform is an ongoing process, and as a historical milestone in this continuity, the Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Act, 2026 has been enacted. Through this amendment, Bangladesh has made significant strides toward ensuring international labor standards. The Minister highlighted that Bangladesh is the first country in Asia to ratify all 10 fundamental conventions of the ILO, brightening the country’s image in the global labor arena.
\nDuring the meeting, the minister detailed the government’s current and future action plans. He stated that the amendment of Bangladesh Labour Rules 2015, forming a tripartite ‘National Social Dialogue Forum’, and introducing a digital case management system alongside an independent alternative dispute resolution mechanism are progressing rapidly. Furthermore, to build an integrated social safety net for workers in both the formal and informal sectors, an initiative has been taken to nationalize the ‘Employment Injury Scheme’.
\nHe also stated that to create employment for skilled manpower both at home and abroad, efforts are underway to establish a new ‘Department of Employment’ under the ministry. This department will ensure self-employment and technical training by launching employment exchanges at the district and upazila levels. The Minister laid special emphasis on the fact that the current government is determined to ensure complete transparency and accountability in every sector, stressing that no irregularities or syndicates would be tolerated in labor migration. The Minister added that the government is working to send workers to various countries, including Malaysia, through a transparent process and at a lower cost.<\/p>\n

Calling for increased technical and institutional cooperation from the ILO to tackle the challenges of technology and global transformation while ensuring a safe working environment, the minister said in the meeting that Bangladesh has been playing a highly responsible role as a member of the governing body. Extensive progress has been made in implementing the ILO roadmap, including the recruitment of new labor inspectors to enhance the capacity of the Department of Labour. Recognizing these positive changes and milestones, he strongly requested the Director-General (DG) to expedite the resolution of the ongoing complaint case against Bangladesh under Article 26 of ILO.
\nILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo highly praised Bangladesh\u2019s groundbreaking reforms in the labor sector. He said, the ILO is committed to keep up collaboration with the Government, workers, and employers of Bangladesh to translate its historic labour reforms into tangible protections for all workers and improved labour market governance. By building on its landmark ratification of all ten (10) ILO fundamental conventions, and ensuring their effective implementation, Bangladesh can secure a promising future for its workers and enterprises, the DG added.
