Staff Correspondent<\/strong>: Minister of Labour and Employment Ariful Haque Chowdhury, MP, stated that, on behalf of the Prime Minister, an initial financial assistance of 1 Lac Taka has been provided\u2014through the local administration\u2014to the family of a worker who was killed during a labour protest in Gazipur. Furthermore, the relevant authorities have been instructed to promptly bring those responsible for this brutal killing to justice.<\/p>\n

The minister made these remarks during a press briefing held on Wednesday at the conference room of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, following a tripartite meeting involving representatives from the government, workers, and employers.<\/p>\n

The Minister stated that, keeping the welfare of workers in mind, Prime Minister Tareq Rahman has approved the construction of a 100-bed hospital for workers in Tongi. Commending the participation of all parties despite the short notice for the meeting, he remarked that this demonstrates a sincere commitment to the interests of the nation and the industry. Urging everyone to return to work, the Minister said, “If the factories thrive, incomes will rise, employment opportunities will be created, and wages will increase. Please return to your factories, and if you have any proposals, submit them in writing to the Wage Board.”<\/p>\n

He further warned that one must not heed any incitement aimed at destabilizing the state or destroying the industry. He added that instructions would be issued to secure the release of any innocent workers who may have been arrested during the protests, while strict action would be taken against those responsible for wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Regarding progress on the wage structure, the minister stated that the Wage Board was formed by Sunday, the official gazette was published that same afternoon, and the first meeting was held in the shortest time in history. Proposals for the wage structure are to be prepared by this coming December, and workers will begin receiving wages under the new structure by January.<\/p>\n

In a press briefing, Prime Minister\u2019s Advisor Mahdi Amin stated that the government is deeply committed to the garment sector. Expressing full confidence in the Wage Board, he voiced his expectation that the board would ensure fair wages and protect the interests of the workers. During the meeting, worker representatives thanked the government for the prompt formation of the Wage Board and urged the workers to remain calm and return to work.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, representatives of the employers expressed sympathy for the workers and urged the government to take steps\u2014including the enactment of legislation\u2014to regulate house rents in industrial areas, alongside increasing wages. Present at the press conference were Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Member of Parliament for the Pabna-5 constituency; Abdur Rahman Tarafder, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment; other senior government officials; and key leaders from both workers’ organizations and the employers’ side.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
