Ratha Yatra, the chariot festival of SriJagannath Dev which is one of the major festivals of the Hindu community,began today with due religious fervor and enthusiasm.In observance of the day, different religious bodies and temple committeeschalked out various programmes.The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKON) chalked out aneight-day programme in Dhaka.The programmes of the festival began in the morning with rendering of<\/p>\n
Harisangkirtan, holding of Agnihotra Jagna seeking world peace and people’s
\nwelfare, recitation of verses from Srimat Bhagabat Geeta, distribution of
\nmoha prosad, discussion, rendition of padaboli kirtan and arati, cultural
\nfunction, staging of religious drama and screening of religious films.<\/p>\n
The programmes of the ISKON at Swamibagh temple in Dhaka started in the
\nmorning with holding of Agnihotra Jagna seeking divine blessings for world
\npeace and people’s welfare where a large number of devotees joined.<\/p>\n
A discussion was organised there in the afternoon. Awami League General
\nSecretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader addressed
\nthe discussion as the chief guest with ISKCON Bangladesh General Secretary
\nCharu Chandra Das Brahmachari in the chair.<\/p>\n
Later, a colorful procession was brought out from Swamibagh temple with
\ncarrying images and idols of Sri Jagannath Dev, his brother Sri Balaram and
\nsister Srimati Subhadra on three largely build Rathas (chariots).
\nIndian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pranay Kumar Verma inaugurated the
\nprocession.<\/p>\n
Then, hundreds of devotees pulled the ropes of the chariots through Jaikali
\nTemple, Motijheel Shapla Chattar, Dainik Bangla intersection, Gulistan, GPO
\nintersection, High Court crossing, Doel Chattar, Central Shaheed Minar,
\nJagannath Hall, Palashi Crossing and rounded up the Ratha Yatra on the
\npremises of the Dhakeshwari National Temple.<\/p>\n
The country’s largest Ratha Yatra festival was held at Dhamrai in Manikganj
\ndistrict.<\/p>\n
Besides, the Ratha Yatra festival was also celebrated at Ramseeta Mandir at
\nJoikali Mandir Road at Shankharibazar and Jagannath Jeo Mandir at Tantibazar
\nin old city and other places across the country.<\/p>\n
Special security measures were taken marking the festival to avert any
\nuntoward incidents.<\/p>\n
Ratha Yatra is a journey in a chariot with deities of Jagannath (Vishnu
\navatar), Balaram, or Balabhadra (his brother), Subhadra (his sister) and
\nSudarshana Chakra (his weapon) on a ratha, a wooden deula-shaped chariot
\naccompanied by people in colorful procession.<\/p>\n
It attracts over a million Hindu pilgrims who join the procession each year
\nin the Indian subcontinent including Bangladesh for long.<\/p>\n
The Ratha Yatra of Puri is considered the oldest and largest Hindu chariot
\nfestival celebrated annually, on the bright half of the lunar month of Aashar
\n(June-July).<\/p>\n
The eight-day Ratha Yatra festival will end with celebration of Ulto Ratha
\nYatra (reverse journey) on June 27.<\/p>\n
Devotees will pull the ropes of the chariots on the same route from
\nDhakeshwari Temple to Swamibagh temple at 3pm.<\/p>\n
State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Swapan Bhattacharjee will join the
\nUlto Ratha Yatra festival as the chief guest.<\/p>\n
