The International Monetary Fund
\n(IMF) has projected the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth for Bangladesh at
\nsix percent for the current fiscal 2023-24 (FY24).<\/p>\n
The IMF also revised upward its projections for Bangladesh’s growth to six
\npercent for the fiscal year 2022-23 from its previous forecast of 5.5
\npercent, according to its World Economic Outlook released today.<\/p>\n
Bangladesh government has set the target at 7.5 percent for FY24.<\/p>\n
The IMF has forecast the headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation in
\nBangladesh to 7.2 percent in FY24.<\/p>\n
According to the IMF latest projections, global growth will slow from 3.5
\npercent in 2022 to 3 percent this year and 2.9 percent next year, a 0.1
\npercentage point downgrade for 2024 from our July projections. This remains
\nwell below the historical average.<\/p>\n
Headline inflation continues to decelerate, from 9.2 percent in 2022, on a
\nyear-over-year basis, to 5.9 percent this year and 4.8 percent in 2024, Core
\ninflation, excluding food and energy prices, is also projected to decline,
\nalbeit more gradually than headline inflation, to 4.5 percent in 2024.<\/p>\n
At the economic outlook, IMF observed that multilateral cooperation can help
\nensure that all countries achieve better growth outcomes.<\/p>\n
First, countries should avoid implementing policies that contravene World
\nTrade Organization rules and distort international trade.<\/p>\n
Second, countries should safeguard the flow of critical minerals needed for
\nthe climate transition, as well as that of agricultural commodities. Such
\n“green corridors” would help reduce volatility and accelerate the green
\ntransition.<\/p>\n
Finally, all countries should aim to limit geo-economic fragmentation that
\nprevents joint progress toward common goals and instead work toward restoring
\ntrust in rules-based multilateral frameworks that enhance transparency and
\npolicy certainty and help foster a shared global prosperity.<\/p>\n
A robust global financial safety net with a well-resourced IMF at its center
