{"id":4577,"date":"2024-01-20T22:03:46","date_gmt":"2024-01-20T18:33:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyenglishtimes.com\/?p=4577"},"modified":"2024-01-20T22:03:46","modified_gmt":"2024-01-20T18:33:46","slug":"nasa-loses-contact-with-its-mini-helicopter-on-mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyenglishtimes.com\/?p=4577","title":{"rendered":"NASA loses contact with its mini-helicopter on Mars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ET Desk:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NASA has lost contact with its tiny<br \/>\nhelicopter Ingenuity during the hard-working craft&#8217;s 72nd flight, the space<br \/>\nagency said.<\/p>\n<p>The agency&#8217;s engineers are attempting to re-establish communications, which<br \/>\nended abruptly on Thursday as the craft was making its descent from a test<br \/>\nflight, NASA said late Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Ingenuity, which resembles a large drone, had arrived on Mars in 2021 with<br \/>\nthe rover Perseverance and became the first motorized craft to fly autonomously<br \/>\non another planet.<\/p>\n<p>Data from the helicopter&#8217;s flights are transmitted via Perseverance back to<br \/>\nEarth.<\/p>\n<p>On its flight Thursday &#8212; &#8220;a quick pop-up vertical flight to check out the<br \/>\nhelicopter&#8217;s systems, following an unplanned early landing during its previous<br \/>\nflight,&#8221; NASA said &#8212; Ingenuity successfully attained an altitude of 40 feet<br \/>\n(12 meters).<\/p>\n<p>But &#8220;during its planned descent, communications between the helicopter and<br \/>\nrover terminated early, prior to touchdown,&#8221; the agency said, adding that &#8220;the<br \/>\nIngenuity team is analyzing available data and considering next steps to<br \/>\nreestablish communications.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a post on X, the former Twitter, NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory added<br \/>\nthat Perseverance was temporarily &#8220;out of line-of-sight with Ingenuity, but the<br \/>\nteam could consider driving closer for a visual inspection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NASA has lost contact with the helicopter before, including for an<br \/>\nagonizing two months last year.<\/p>\n<p>The mini rotorcraft, which weighs just four pounds (1.8 kilograms), has far<br \/>\nexceeded its original goal of undertaking five flights over 30 days on the red<br \/>\nplanet.<\/p>\n<p>In all, it has covered just over 10 miles (17 kilometers) and reached<br \/>\naltitudes of up to 79 feet (24 meters).<\/p>\n<p>Its longevity has proved remarkable, particularly considering that it must<br \/>\nsurvive glacially cold Martian nights, kept warm by the solar panels that<br \/>\nrecharge its batteries during daylight hours.<\/p>\n<p>Working with Perseverance, it has acted as an aerial scout to assist its<br \/>\nwheeled companion in searching for possible signs of ancient microbial life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ET Desk:\u00a0 NASA has lost contact with its tiny helicopter Ingenuity during the hard-working craft&#8217;s 72nd flight, the space agency said.
