{"id":5284,"date":"2024-02-22T20:55:39","date_gmt":"2024-02-22T17:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyenglishtimes.com\/?p=5284"},"modified":"2024-02-22T20:55:39","modified_gmt":"2024-02-22T17:25:39","slug":"china-may-miss-all-key-climate-targets-for-2025-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyenglishtimes.com\/?p=5284","title":{"rendered":"China may miss all key climate targets for 2025: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>World desk:<\/p>\n<p>China may miss all of its main climate<br \/>\ngoals for 2025, a new report showed Thursday, as the world&#8217;s largest emitter<br \/>\nincreased its reliance on carbon-intensive industries to bolster a flagging<br \/>\neconomy.<\/p>\n<p>China has pledged to bring its emissions of carbon dioxide to a peak by 2030<br \/>\nand to net zero by 2060.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Paris climate agreement, Beijing has also committed to a series of<br \/>\nstepping-stone targets, such as ensuring 20 percent of its energy comes from<br \/>\nalternatives to fossil fuels and cutting the carbon intensity of its economy<br \/>\nby 2025.<\/p>\n<p>But the country&#8217;s energy-guzzling rebound from the Covid-19 pandemic means<br \/>\n&#8220;all of these targets are severely off track after 2023&#8221;, according to a<br \/>\nreport by the Finland-based Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.<\/p>\n<p>Carbon emissions from China&#8217;s power industry rose 5.2 percent last year as<br \/>\nBeijing burned more coal to sate soaring electricity demand, the report<br \/>\npublished on the Carbon Brief website said.<\/p>\n<p>Adverse weather conditions added to the problem as a series of droughts<br \/>\npushed hydropower production to its lowest levels in over two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, Beijing needs to achieve a &#8220;record fall&#8221; of four to six percent<br \/>\nin emissions to reach its stated carbon intensity target &#8212; the amount of<br \/>\ncarbon emissions per unit of economic output &#8212; for 2025.<\/p>\n<p>However, China could still hit some of next year&#8217;s goals if it continues to<br \/>\nbuild on record renewable energy installations last year, the report added.<\/p>\n<p>China has struggled to sustain its economic rebound since it jettisoned<br \/>\nstrict pandemic-era health controls at the end of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s number two economy grew at 5.2 percent last year, one of its<br \/>\nslowest rates in decades.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World desk: China may miss all of its main climate goals for 2025, a new report showed Thursday, as the world&#8217;s largest emitter increased its reliance on carbon-intensive industries to bolster a flagging economy.
