Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister
\nSaber Hossain Chowdhury today said the United Nations (UN) will provide
\nsubstantial funding to Bangladesh through its various agencies to combat
\nclimate change.<\/p>\n
He emphasised the need for increased financial support, stating that the
\nallocated Taka 35,000 crore from 24 ministries in the current fiscal year is
\ninsufficient.<\/p>\n
Discussions were held with the UN delegation on sourcing additional funds for
\nclimate mitigation and adaptation efforts through various UN channels, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Minister Chowdhury talked to reporters following a bilateral meeting with UN
\nResident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis at his residence in Paribagh in the capital.<\/p>\n
Louise Barber, senior development coordination officer and strategic planner,
\nwas also present on the occasion.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the focus on securing international financial support to address
\nclimate change impacts, Lewis reiterated the UN’s commitment to collaborate
\nclosely with Bangladesh on climate resilience strategies, including the
\nimplementation of national adaptation plans, advocacy, flood control and
\ncommunity-based adaptation measures.<\/p>\n
She praised Bangladesh’s leadership in environmental conservation and pledged
\ncontinued UN support for the country’s sustainable development goals.<\/p>\n
The meeting also discussed collaborative efforts to tackle critical
\nenvironmental challenges such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and
\nplastic pollution.<\/p>\n
Lewis and Chowdhury explored avenues to strengthen partnerships between the
\nUN and Bangladesh in environmental protection and sustainable development
