Civil Aviation and\u00a0Tourism Minister M Faruk Khan today said the\u00a0newly built third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal\u00a0International Airport (HSIA) will be fully\u00a0operational by the end of this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am satisfied with the progress… It is likely to be\u00a0fully operational by the end of this year or early next\u00a0year,\u201d he told reporters at a briefing after visiting\u00a0the new state-of-the art terminal in the capital.<\/p>\n
The minister said the work on the new terminal is\u00a0progressing within the stipulated time frame,\u00a0despite the tough time caused due to the pandemic\u00a0and global economic downturn.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made the soft launch\u00a0of the third terminal on October 7 last year. The\u00a0project, involving Tk 21,300 crore, commenced on\u00a0December 28, 2019.<\/p>\n
Replying to a question, the minister said\u00a0construction of a dependable second runway for\u00a0HSIA is under consideration to ensure the optimum\u00a0use of the new terminal.<\/p>\n
About the ground handling of the HSIA, Khan said\u00a0Biman Bangladesh Airlines, which has been\u00a0enjoying the monopoly on that, will manage the\u00a0ground operation under a joint venture with a\u00a0reputed global service provider chosen by the\u00a0Japanese consortium.<\/p>\n
Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Md\u00a0Mokammel Hossain, Civil Aviation Authority of\u00a0Bangladesh (CAAB) Air Vice Marshal Mafidur\u00a0Rahman and Biman\u2019s Managing Director and CEO\u00a0Jahidul Islam Bhuiyan\u00a0were also present.<\/p>\n
The CAAB chairman said the new terminal will be\u00a0fully ready for use in October as system integration,\u00a0calibration, and testing of equipment are done.<\/p>\n
Aviation Dhaka Consortium, the contractor of the\u00a0project, has already completed the physical work of\u00a0the third terminal, which covers an area of 542,000\u00a0square metres, 230,000 square metres of floor\u00a0space, 115 check-in counters, 66 departures, 59\u00a0arrivals, and three VIP immigration desks.<\/p>\n
When the terminal is fully operational, the annual\u00a0passenger handling capacity of the Hazrat Shahjalal\u00a0International Airport will rise to 24 million from the\u00a0current 8 million.<\/p>\n
Cargo handling capacity\u2014500,000 metric tonnes\u2014will also multiply.<\/p>\n
The government decided, in principle, to let a\u00a0Japanese consortium under a public-private\u00a0partnership operate and maintain the third\u00a0terminal.<\/p>\n
CAAB has already started discussion with a\u00a0consortium of six Japanese companies.<\/p>\n
CAAB will handle customs and immigration, while\u00a0the Japanese company will manage the airport,\u00a0ensuring the services needed from the time a\u00a0passenger enters the airport to the time they board\u00a0a plane.<\/p>\n
The third terminal is designed to connect with a\u00a0multimodal transport system to let passengers to\u00a0enter and exit smoothly.<\/p>\n
The new terminal will be connected with the\u00a0elevated expressway, underground railway, and\u00a0airport railway station through a tunnel.<\/p>\n
Besides, hajj pilgrims will be able to access the third\u00a0terminal from Ashkona hajj camp through another\u00a0tunnel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
