{"id":8841,"date":"2024-06-15T03:05:46","date_gmt":"2024-06-14T23:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyenglishtimes.com\/?p=8841"},"modified":"2024-06-15T03:05:46","modified_gmt":"2024-06-14T23:35:46","slug":"million-plus-take-part-in-hajj-pilgrimage-under-shadow-of-gaza-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyenglishtimes.com\/?p=8841","title":{"rendered":"Million-plus take part in hajj pilgrimage under shadow of Gaza war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Staff correspondent :<\/p>\n<p>More than one million Muslim<br \/>\npilgrims packed a giant tented city near Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on Friday for a<br \/>\nhajj pilgrimage held in sweltering heat and against the grim backdrop of the<br \/>\nGaza war.<\/p>\n<p>Robed worshippers arrived on buses or on foot, many shaded by umbrellas, at<br \/>\nthe vast encampment in Mina after performing the &#8220;tawaf&#8221; &#8212; walking seven times<br \/>\naround the Kaaba, the giant black cube at Mecca&#8217;s Grand Mosque.<\/p>\n<p>Chanting &#8220;God is great&#8221; and &#8220;God, we answer your call&#8221;, many were awash<br \/>\nwith spiritual fervour as they followed in the footsteps of the Prophet<br \/>\nMohammed&#8217;s final pilgrimage nearly 1,400 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Participants, who numbered 1.5 million by Monday, have travelled from all<br \/>\nparts of the world for the annual rites, this year held in intense heat with<br \/>\nforecast daily highs of 44 degrees Celsius (111 Fahrenheit).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very, very hot,&#8221; said Fahad Azmar, 31, from Pakistan. &#8220;But I thank<br \/>\nGod for the opportunity to be here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They are spending the night at Mina, a rocky valley several kilometres<br \/>\n(miles) outside Mecca, before climbing Mount Arafat for the pilgrimage&#8217;s climax<br \/>\non Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Accommodation in Mina&#8217;s air-conditioned tents is organised by nationality<br \/>\nand price, depending on how much each pilgrim paid for their hajj package.<\/p>\n<p>Many worshippers were tightly packed inside as they sat and lay on narrow<br \/>\nmattresses laid close to each other on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There should be more space between the beds, and the air-conditioning<br \/>\ndoesn&#8217;t work very well&#8230; but the hajj is all about patience,&#8221; said Intisham<br \/>\nal-Ahi, a 44-year-old Pakistani who was sharing a tent with dozens of his<br \/>\ncompatriots.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, a group of Moroccan pilgrims was growing angry, claiming to have<br \/>\nbeen given a raw deal by the agent who booked their pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s more people than are allowed in the tents&#8230; they&#8217;re asking us to<br \/>\nshare tents with people who paid half of what we spent,&#8221; fumed Hicham, who did<br \/>\nnot want to give his surname. He said he paid about 17,000 euros for his trip.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8216;Carry an umbrella&#8217; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Outside, misting stations were installed to cool the faithful, and security<br \/>\nguards splashed passers-by with water.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the hajj is outdoors but Saturday will be particularly testing for<br \/>\nthe worshippers, when they spend most of the day praying on Mount Arafat.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed al-Abdulali, spokesperson for the Saudi health ministry, told AFP<br \/>\nthis week there were more than 10,000 documented cases of heat-related<br \/>\nillnesses last year, 10 percent of which were heat stroke.<\/p>\n<p>A text message sent to pilgrims on Thursday instructed them to &#8220;drink water<br \/>\nregularly, more than two litres daily&#8221; and to &#8220;always carry an umbrella&#8221;,<br \/>\nwarning that temperatures could climb to 48 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n<p>Many pilgrims said they would pray for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, more<br \/>\nthan eight months into the Israel-Hamas war that has left tens of thousands<br \/>\ndead.<\/p>\n<p>Zahra Benizahra, 78, from Morocco could not hold back her tears as she<br \/>\ndescribed the &#8220;images of war, displaced people, dead children&#8221; that haunt her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our brothers are dying, and we can see it with our own eyes,&#8221; she told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>Belinda Elham of Indonesia, which has the world&#8217;s largest Muslim<br \/>\npopulation, said she would &#8220;pray every day so that what&#8217;s happening in<br \/>\nPalestine ends&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Palestinian pilgrims &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>The Gaza war was triggered by Hamas&#8217;s unprecedented attack on southern<br \/>\nIsrael on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of 1,194 people, mostly<br \/>\ncivilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.<\/p>\n<p>The militants also seized 251 hostages. Of these, 116 remain in Gaza<br \/>\nalthough the army says 41 of them are dead.<\/p>\n<p>Israel&#8217;s retaliatory offensive against Hamas has killed at least 37,232<br \/>\npeople, also mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-ruled territory&#8217;s health<br \/>\nministry.<\/p>\n<p>Some 2,000 Palestinians are performing the hajj at the special invitation<br \/>\nof King Salman, official media said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Gulf kingdom&#8217;s minister in charge of religious pilgrimages<br \/>\nwarned last week that &#8220;no political activity&#8221; will be tolerated.<\/p>\n<p>The hajj, one of the world&#8217;s largest religious gatherings, is one of the<br \/>\nfive pillars of Islam and must be performed at least once by all Muslims who<br \/>\nhave the means to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Some have waited for years for the chance to make the trip, with permits<br \/>\nallocated by Saudi authorities on a quota basis for each country.<\/p>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s hajj drew more than 1.8 million pilgrims, according to official<br \/>\nfigures, after authorities lifted pandemic-era restrictions and scrapped age<br \/>\nlimits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Staff correspondent : More than one million Muslim pilgrims packed a giant tented city near Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on Friday for a hajj pilgrimage held in sweltering heat and against the grim backdrop of the Gaza war.
