Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has
\ncalled for sustainable initiatives to face the adverse impact of climate
\nchange in the region, particularly in its vast Barind tract.<\/p>\n
“Climate change is one of the global risks in the current 21st century and
\nBangladesh has become most vulnerable due to its effect,” he said, while
\naddressing an inception workshop in Naogaon as the chief guest today.<\/p>\n
On behalf of their project titled “Extended Community Climate Change-
\nDrought”, Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and National Development
\nProgramme (NDP) jointly organised the workshop at the office conference hall
\nof Deputy Commissioner (DC).<\/p>\n
PKSF Managing Director Dr Namita Halder addressed the meeting as special
\nguest with DC Golam Maola in the chair.<\/p>\n
Representatives of different public offices, international development
\nassociate organisations and PKSF associate organisations and university
\nteachers joined the workshop.<\/p>\n
Besides, executive directors and project officers from 18 project-
\nimplementing organisations working to mitigate the adverse impact of climate
\nchange were also present.<\/p>\n
Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder said the Barind area, particularly Naogaon
\ndistrict, has become one of the hotspots of climate change. Prevalence of
\ndrought has gradually been triggering in the region due to the adverse impact
\nof climate change.<\/p>\n
The odd situation has been posing a serious threat to availability of both
\ndrinking and irrigation water mounting the irrigation cost.<\/p>\n
He, however, said the present government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has
\nadopted diversified steps, including tree plantation, re-excavation of river,
\ncanal and pond and increasing use of surface water, to mitigate the drought
\ncondition in the Barind area.<\/p>\n
The minister stressed the need for successful implementation of the projects
