The chief adviser on Wednesday made the allegation after visiting three spots of Aynaghor in Dhaka that were previously used as torture cells and secret prisons.
“There is a term of Jahiliya. The previous government has established the Jahiliya. It is a secret detention place,” he said after visiting an Aynaghor along with his advisory council members, journalists, victims and their family members.
The Aynaghors are located in Agargaon, Kachukhet and Uttara areas of the capital Dhaka, according to the press wing of the chief adviser.
“There are horrible scenes. Brutal cruelty took place here. As much as I hear, it is unbelievable, is this our world, our society? Those who are oppressed are also alive in our society. I heard from them. There is no explanation as to what happened,” he said.
The victims were picked up and confined here intentionally and held them hostage branding them either terrorist or militant, he said.
“A good number of such torture cells are located at different parts in the country. I thought here are few number. Now I hear there are different versions (editions) of torture cells across the country. The number could not be ascertained,” said the chief adviser.
The people have been deprived of their minimum human rights, he said putting emphasise on securing the evidences and ensuring justice for those involved in such activities.
It may be pointed out that the Jahiliya is a historical era in Islamic salvation history that can describe the pre-Islamic Arabian past or just the Hejaz leading up to the life of Muhammad.
The Jahiliya served as a grand narrative of a morally corrupt social order. Its people lacked religious knowledge and civilised qualities. As a result, they committed polytheism and idol worship, female infanticide, had societies rife with tyranny, injustice, despotism and anarchy and prejudice resulted in vainglorious tribal antagonisms.
