ET Desk: On Sunday (August 2), a health screening and awareness program was held at Dungria Government Primary School in Sylhet, organized by the Society of Macro Improvement of Life and Environment (SMILE), with the aim of raising public awareness about thalassemia prevention and ensuring essential health check-ups for the general public.

In this program, doctors and experts discussed various aspects of thalassemia, including its causes, symptoms, treatment, and prevention.

Professor Dr. Md. Ziaur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Sylhet Medical University, attended the event and remarked in his speech that others would be inspired by the way ‘Smile’ is undertaking tree-planting initiatives to protect the country’s environment, alongside providing educational and medical assistance to the marginalized sections of society.

The social initiatives undertaken by Smile undoubtedly deserve praise.

Specialist physicians who participated in the medical camp included Dr. Abu Yusuf Md. Nazim, Head of the Department of Hematology and Hemato-oncology and Consultant Hematologist at North East Medical College Hospital; Dr. Tuhin Barua Tamal, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital; and Dr. Md. Benjamin, Consultant Pediatric Gastroenterologist at the same hospital.

Representing Smile were the organization’s Chairperson Kaniz Fatima, Executive Director Delwar Jahan Chowdhury Apel, and member M Rezaul Murad.

In the second phase of the event, Professor Dr. Md. Ziaur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Sylhet Medical University, inaugurated a tree-planting program. On the same day, a separate tree-planting program was held on the premises of Sunamganj Medical College Hospital.
