AL candidate elected mayor in Sylhet

Awami League mayoral candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury has been unofficially elected in the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) elections.

Returning Officer Faisal Quader announced the results of the election at Sylhet Jalalabad Gas Auditorium at 9:30 pm on Wednesday.

As per the unofficial result, Anwaruzzaman bagged 1,19,991 votes while his nearest rival candidate Nazrul Islam of Jatiya Party got 50,862 votes.

Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Mahmudul Hasan got 12,794 votes, Zaker party candidate Jahirul Alam got 3,405 votes, independent candidates Mostaque Ahmed Rouf Mostafa got 2,959 votes, Abdul Hanif Kutu got 4,296 votes, Salah Uddin Rimon got 2,648 votes and Shah Jahan Miah got 29,688 votes.

In the SCC polls, 8 people contested for the post of mayor, 273 people for the post of general councillor and 87 people for the post of reserved women councillor.

Anwaruzzaman, a resident of the United Kingdom, contested for the post of mayor of Sylhet for the first time. He is the joint secretary of United Kingdom Awami League.
