Urge to strengthen commercial relations between Bangladesh and Myanmar

Staff correspondent :

Bangladesh and Myanmar have trade potential. Despite being neighbours, the volume of bilateral trade between the two countries is very low. FBCCI, the apex organization of businessmen, has urged to strengthen the commercial relations between the two countries by quickly solving the existing problems between Bangladesh and Myanmar.
FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam made this call in a courtesy meeting with Myanmar’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Aung Kyaw Moe, at the FBCCI office in Gulshan in the capital on Saturday. FBCCI Vice President Shami Kaiser and directors were present.
Mahbubul Alam said in the meeting, trade between Myanmar and Bangladesh has been going on for a long time. Once there was trade with Yangon by sea from Chittagong. But due to several reasons, the rate of trade between the two countries has decreased slightly. Even though there are many potential sectors of both countries, we are not able to utilize those opportunities properly. He also commented that solving the existing problems between the two countries, including the Rohingya crisis, will benefit both countries commercially. He urged Myanmar to take steps to solve the Rohingya problem.
The FBCCI president also said that Bangladesh has gained a great reputation worldwide in various products including ready-made garments, pharmaceutical industry, ceramics, jute, leather products. Myanmar can import these products from Bangladesh. Besides, Bangladesh can import various products including rice, onions, spices from Myanmar. He also commented that Myanmar can come forward to meet the energy needs of this country.
He urged Myanmar businessmen to invest in Bangladesh’s Special Economic Zone.
Ambassador Aung Q Moe said that Bangladesh and Myanmar have historically maintained friendly relations. Myanmar was one of the 5 countries that first recognized Bangladesh in 1971. He also said that Myanmar is interested in strengthening the commercial relations between the two countries. He also said that the Myanmar government is working with Bangladesh to solve the Rohingya problem.
