Everyone must take a stance against bombings: Sheikh Hasina

Staff Reporter: Calling upon the country’s people to build resistance against arson attacks, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said ousting the government is not as easy as setting a few vehicles on fire.

“I request to you, today everyone must take a stance against bombings, arson attacks and burning people everywhere…Where do they get so much courage to take away people’s lives or obstruct people from voting,” asked the prime minister.

Sheikh Hasina was speaking with reporters following her visit to Hazrat Shahjalal’s shrine in Sylhet on Wednesday.

They should remember that if they play with fire, it will burn their hands as well, she said.

The prime minister said the BNP-Jamaat alliance unleashed the reign of terrorism to foil national elections slated for January 7 next, adding, none will accept any sort of militant and terrorist activities in Bangladesh.

She said: “If anyone does this, one day the people of the country will throw them out. That is the reality.”

The ruling party chief also cautioned against the persons who are behind the recent arson attacks in railways, saying that no mercy will be shown to those involved in arson attacks and killing people.

“We must take stern actions against them,” Sheikh Hasina said.

Asserting the constitutional right of citizens to vote, Sheikh Hasina declared that no one should obstruct or harm others for exercising their voting rights.

She also said: “They thought that the government would fall if they set two vehicles on fires. It is not so easy. I don’t eat rice with milk, that’s what I want to say.”

The prime minister emphasized that Bangladesh rejects all forms of militant and terrorist acts. She expressed confidence that the people of Bangladesh would eventually reject those responsible for such actions.

About the polls boycott of BNP, the Awami League president said that if anyone doesn’t want to participate in the election, that is fine, “but, why will the people be killed through arson attacks”.

She said that uprooting rail line fishplates and setting fire to rail compartments are totally terrorist and militant activities as government properties are the properties of the mass people.

“And the BNP-Jamaat alliance are doing terrorist and militant activities,” she said, mentioning that it is the character of BNP to burn people alive.

“What type of anti-government movement is that?” she questioned.

The premier said whenever Awami League comes to the government it brings welfare for the people, and added the Awami League government is fulfilling the basic needs of the people one by one.

The Awami League president said: “Those who are robbers, murderers, corruptors, embezzlers of orphans’ money are the ones who burn the people of this country with fire and want to thwart the elections.”

Sheikh Hasina also sought votes for the Boat symbol in the upcoming national polls.

“If people cast their votes for the Boat symbol in the January 7 election and if we can form the government again, the remaining needs of the people will also be fulfilled, InshaAllah,” she vowed.

She went on saying: “We will make the whole Bangladesh developed and prosperous. And no people will be address-less, homeless and landless.”

The prime minister continued that her party’s aim is to bring smiles to the faces of the poor people and make the country developed and prosperous as dreamt by the Father of the Nation.

The head of the government said that Bangladesh has already attained the status of developing nation.

“I know that if our government comes to power again, it will be effective,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina came down heavily on the BNP-Jamaat alliance over the tragic death of a child and her mother who tried to save her baby from the fire in the train.

In her emotional choked voice, she said: “Nothing can be as painful as this scene. How can a human being do this?”

She also questioned what type of politics is this which leads to attacks on mass people, police and journalists.
