RU Students Demand Justice for IU’s Sajid

RU Correspondent: Students of Rajshahi University (RU) staged a protest and human chain on Monday (August 4) demanding a proper investigation and swift justice for the murder of Sajid Abdullah, a student of the Islamic University (IU) who was allegedly killed by strangulation.

The demonstration was organized under the banner of “Rabistha Millat Paribar” and took place at 11 AM on Paris Road of the university campus.

During the protest, students chanted slogans such as “Why does administration stay silent when students are killed?”, “My brother lies in the grave, why is the killer still free?”, “Why murder at IU? We demand interim answers!”, and “We want justice for Sajid Abdullah!”

Salahuddin Ammar, a student of the Department of Islamic Studies, said, “Sajid Abdullah was a meritorious student at Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasa, a Hafiz of the Qur’an, a cultural activist, and a frontline fighter in the July uprising. He was strangled to death, and despite 15 days passing since the incident, the IU administration has taken no action. This is a shameful failure. Sajid never went anywhere alone, yet he was murdered and dumped in a pond. We demand a speedy trial.”

Md. Tajul Islam, General Secretary of Rabistha Millat Paribar and a 4th-year student of the Department of Islamic Studies, said, “Even after 15 days, the IU administration hasn’t taken any interim measures following the murder of a student on campus. It is deeply disappointing. If students are not safe even within a university, where are they safe? The murder happened in broad daylight, yet the administration continues to delay. We demand immediate justice and the strictest punishment for all involved. Otherwise, people across the country will be forced to take to the streets.”

Fahir Amin, President of the Student Rights Association, stated, “Sajid Abdullah was murdered in a premeditated manner. The perpetrators must face exemplary punishment to prevent such incidents from happening again. If the administration fails to ensure a proper investigation, we will intensify our movement.”

It is worth noting that Sajid Abdullah’s body was recovered on July 17 from a pond near Shah Azizur Rahman Hall at IU. The forensic report, released on Sunday (August 3), confirmed that Sajid had been strangled before being dumped in the water.
