ET Desk: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar strongly condemned and protested the government’s unwanted interference in the country’s largest bank, ‘Islami Bank, Bangladesh PLC’, on Sunday,0l May 24. He issued a statement on Monday, May 25.
“We are observing with concern that the government is taking one rash decision after another, putting the country’s banking system and financial sector at risk,” he said in the statement.
He said, “On Sunday, May 24, the MD of Islami Bank was forced to resign. The chairman was also removed from his post in order to create a rift in public trust. Such a situation has created intense anger and dissatisfaction among the bank’s crores of customers and the general public.”
Mia Golam Parwar said, “We are also observing with concern that the person who has been appointed as the new chairman of Islami Bank is a known accomplice of the escaped Awami fascists. Appointing a person like him is like cutting a canal and bringing in a crocodile.”
He further said, “Instead of taking any effective action against those who looted 2.5 lakh crore taka from the banking sector, instead of keeping them out of reach and paving the way for loot, a former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank, who was ousted after the 24th mass uprising, has been appointed as the chairman of Islami Bank. I strongly condemn and protest against such a move by the government and Bangladesh Bank and demand his removal.”
He said, “In order to restore order in the country’s financial sector, the incompetent and partisan governor of Bangladesh Bank must be removed, the looted money must be returned, and the board of the Islamic Bank must be restructured with a qualified, talented, honest person as the chairman, with a composition of qualified, talented, honest and experienced people in Islamic banking. Otherwise, the government will have to bear the responsibility for the situation that has arisen.”
