US to provide $35 million for climate-smart farming strategies in Bangladesh

Staff correspondent :

The United States (US) will provide USD 35 million to Bangladeshi farmers to combat climate impacts and increase their production.
The assistance will be provided under the five-year ‘Feed the Future Climate-Smart Agriculture Project’ implemented by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) in collaboration with the Bangladesh Ministry of Agriculture.
Funded by the US government through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the project will teach smallholder farmers in southern districts of Bangladesh to adopt climate-smart farming techniques such as improved seed use and maximum fertilizer use.
The project will bring together private sector organizations, agro-input service providers and public sector stakeholders to build resilience across sectors using climate-smart technologies and practices.
Agriculture Secretary Wahida Akhter, Director of USAID Bangladesh Economic Growth Program today in BARC Auditorium. Muhammad Khan, President and CEO of IFDC Henk Van Duijn and Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC). Sheikh Mohammad Bakhtiar inaugurated this new project.
The ‘Feed the Future Climate-Smart Agriculture Project’ will help Bangladesh overcome the challenges of supply chain disruption caused by the global Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s war against Ukraine, in addition to addressing the effects of climate change.
The project will reduce fertilizer use by farmers, reduce fertilizer subsidy costs and help increase overall crop production.
