Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal today called upon all stakeholders to engage in dialogues to resolve the ongoing political crisis in the country. The CEC said this after emerging from an hour-long meeting with US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas this morning.”A congenial environment is essential for holding the elections. The present crisis is a political one and our [Election Commission’s] work has no conflict with it. Nonetheless, if the political crisis could be resolved, it would be more comfortable for us to hold the next general elections,” the CEC said. The CEC also said that the EC expects the political parties to engage with each other through dialogues to resolve the disputes”A stable situation is very much necessary for holding the next general elections. Although the EC has no initiative regarding political dialogues at present, it expects the political parties and stakeholders to engage among themselves to resolve their disputes.”We have called upon the political parties to this end, and they have also agreed that engagement in dialogues to resolve the crisis is needed. After all, the ongoing political issues cannot be resolved without dialogues. The EC expects the political parties to sit at the same table and hold discussions among themselves towards resolving their disputes,” CEC Awal added.
