As the nation observes Martyred Intellectuals Day, Rajshahi University stands as a solemn ground for remembrance and reflection on the sacrifices made by the intellectuals of Bangladesh.
Rajshahi University, known for its rich academic history, takes a moment to pay homage to the intellectuals who were targeted and brutally killed by Pakistani forces and their collaborators on this day over five decades ago.
On this day, with the sunrise, the national flag was hoisted at half-mast in RU’s administration building, residential hall, and other buildings. Vice-Chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar along with senior officials of the administration laid wreaths at the martyr intellectual memorial, at the Martyr’s Minar and Badhyabhoomi monument. At this time, they observed a minute of silence seeking the forgiveness of the souls of the martyrs. And so did various organizations and clubs.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar said “In 1947, a young man thought about Bangladesh. He is the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In the continuation of his thoughts, he presented 6-point demands. Bangabandhu remembered those who did intellectual thought or practice from the beginning. The 6th clause of our liberation charter was only touched by the intellectuals who think about the nation as a whole, including the economy. Bangabandhu’s words come back to us again and again.”
He added, “Why did our beloved people become martyrs during the liberation war? They could live longer. Those who went to the liberation war have gone to commit suicide? They knew that they could die in the liberation war. They sacrificed their lives for the country and sacrificed themselves to protect the motherland. At the call of Bangabandhu, everyone except some Razakars-Albadars jumped into the liberation war. As a result, we got independent Bangladesh. Bangabandhu always respected intellectuals. The contribution of intellectuals to the Bengali nation is undeniable.”

A place filled with memories of the Liberation War is the Rajshahi University’s Badhyabhoomi monument. However, even on Martyr Intellectuals Day, a banquet is going on with the playing of ‘Hindi songs’ on the premises of the Badhyabhoomi monument. On Thursday at 11:00 a.m. on the south side of the Badhyabhoomi monument premises, the cooking of the banquet is going on. On the western side of it, a cloth canopy surrounds the four sides, and a ‘Hindi song’ is being played on the sound box inside. It’s known to Jugantor online.
