Upazila Parishad Election: Results rejected, re-election demanded

Staff Correspondent: Barrister Sohrab Khan Chowdhury, the candidate for the post of chairman in Brahmanpara upazila election with pineapple symbol and Shahida Akhtar, the candidate for chairman post in the symbol of horse in Debidwar upazila election, rejected the results protesting that the upazila parishad election was not free, fair and impartial.
Meanwhile, alleging irregularities they held a press conference demanding re-election in the National Press Club.
In the press conference, they said that a written complaint has been submitted to the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging irregularities and demanding re-election. Besides, on the day of the election, they mentioned that they complained about the corruption and irregularities in the voting to the Returning Officer in written and verbally.
Voters have been prevented from voting in the upazila elections, including the expulsion of agents from various polling stations. In some polling stations, massive fake votes have been cast. Which has gone viral on various social media. They were physically assaulted when they went to various polling stations.
In the 3rd phase of the sixth upazila election, along with various upazilas across the country, Brahmanpara upazila and Debidwar upazila parishads of Cumilla-5 and Cumilla-4 constituencies were also held on 29 May 2024.
As the people could not cast vote in Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla on May 29 and due to vote rigging by our local MP (Cumilla-5) Abu Jaher’s trespasses, I am demanding re-election by canceling the results of this election. In the interest of democracy and to protect people’s right to vote, I am requesting the Chief Election Commissioner to hold elections in Brahmanpara Upazila of Cumilla again.
