Dhaka Labour Appellate Tribunal today acquitted Grameen Telecom Chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others in a case lodged for violation of labour law.Labour Appellate Tribunal chairman MA Awal pronounced the judgment this afternoon.Dhaka’s 3rd Labour Court on January 1, 2024, had convicted and sentenced six-month jail to Dr Muhammad Yunus, Grameen Telecom’s director and former managing director Md Ashraful Hasan, members of Board of Directors Nur Jahan Begum and Md Shahjahan.The Labour Appellate Tribunal, however, on January 28 allowed the four convicts bail in the case and stayed the Labour Court conviction and sentence against them.Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) on February 4 appealed against the Labour Appellate Tribunal’s order.After holding hearing on the appeal, the High Court on March 18 scrapped Labour Appellate Tribunal’s order that had stayed the conviction of Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others in a case.DIFE Inspector Arifuzzaman filed the case on September 9, 2021. The court on June 6, 2023, framed charges in the case.
