The regional climate conference has kicked off with colorful arrangements. This is the first time that this conference has started in Bangladesh with the countries of South Asia to deal with the negative effects of the growing climate change in the world which is troubled by war and economic instability.
The conference started on Friday (September 8) at Sheraton Hotel in the capital. It was jointly organized by Climate Parliament Bangladesh, The Earth Society, Observer Research Foundation (ORF) and Climate Parliament.
At the beginning of the program, ‘Climate Parliament Bangladesh’ chairperson Tanvir Shakil Joy MP and Convener Nahim Razzak MP presented the details of the ‘Regional Climate Conference 2023’.
The three-day-long event was attended by members of Parliament from South Asian countries like India, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives, ambassadors of different countries assigned to Bangladesh, top level policy makers, corporate sector, domestic and international development agencies and other sectors.
120 distinguished people will participate as panelists in 4 thematic segments and 19 sessions. Also, about 600 delegates from the country and outside the country are directly participating in this conference.
In the first day session, the panelists will discuss several topics including sustainable water and waste management to achieve climate resilient development and strengthening local governance and climate impacts, erosion and degradation and locally driven adaptation for sustainable development.
National Parliament (Jatiya Sangsad) Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury attended as chief guest in the opening session of the three sessions of the first day. The next session will be discussed by Tajul Islam, Minister of Local Government, Secretary of Ministry of Water Resources Nazmul Ahsan, Member of Climate Parliament and Member of Parliament of India Ms. Agatha Sangma, Country Director of Water Aid Ms. Hasina Jahan, State Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid, Director of International Center for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) Professor Salimul Haque and others.
A total of 22 organizations including government and private organizations, embassies of different countries, national and international development agencies are directly related to this event.
