ET Desk: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced plans to hold a political rally on Saturday (July 19) in Dhaka, highlighting four major demands—including the introduction of a proportional representation (PR) electoral system.
The announcement was made by the party’s Secretary General, Mia Golam Porwar, at a press conference held at the National Press Club on Thursday (17 july).
Speaking at the press conference, Mia Golam Porwar said, “For 54 years since independence, Jamaat-e-Islami has faced oppression and political vengeance in various ways. After the 2024 mass uprising, we have regained freedom of speech and the opportunity to exercise political rights. That is why we are organizing this political rally on July 19. We have invited all political forces to join.”
He added, “This rally has several objectives. First, to demand the creation of a level political playing field to ensure impartial national elections. Second, to ensure justice for those who were martyred during the July uprising, along with their rehabilitation and proper medical treatment for the injured.”
He said, “Third, to complete necessary reforms to ensure fair elections. Fourth, to call for elections based on proportional representation (PR). We will also demand voting rights for expatriates, enabling them to cast their votes from abroad. In addition, we will raise issues related to law and order, and the conduct of local government elections.”
Porwar stated that organizing committees and subcommittees have already been formed, and comprehensive preparations have been made for the rally. He said that they have sought cooperation from the Home Affairs Advisor and the Police Commissioner to ensure security, and both have assured maximum cooperation.
He further said, “Due to the expected large public turnout, there may be traffic congestion and inconvenience in the capital. For that, I apologize to the public in advance. We are working for the betterment of the country and its people.”
Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary Rafiqul Islam Khan, Central Media and Publicity Secretary Matiur Rahman Akand, Dhaka South City Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, North City Ameer Mohammad Selim Uddin, South City Secretary General Shafiqul Islam Masud, former Central Shibir President Delwar Hossain, Yaseen Arafat, and among others, were present on the occasion.
