Ziaur rahman brought changes to Bangladesh’s political landscape within a short time:Fakhrul

ET Desk: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said, repeated attempts have been made to destroy BNP, but like the phoenix bird, the party has always risen again with the ideals of Martyred President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia.

He made these remarks after paying tribute at the grave of Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Banglanagor in the capital on the occasion of the party’s 47th founding anniversary.

The party celebrated its founding anniversary through various programmes, including discussions, rallies, and children’s events such as drawing, across the country.

Mirza Fakhrul said that the martyred President Ziaur Rahman established a multi-party system in place of one-party rule.

His political philosophy was nationalism. He brought changes to Bangladesh’s political landscape within a short time.

He ensured freedom of speech, freedom of the media, people’s fundamental rights, and the independence of the judiciary, while at the same time introducing a free-market economy, which brought about a profound transformation in the country. He laid the foundation of the garments industry.

He further said that BNP has been struggling to restore democracy, and repeated attempts have been made to destroy the party. Around 6 million people have been subjected to false cases, 2,000 people have been killed, and countless leaders and activists have been murdered. But BNP has risen with people’s support upholding Ziaur Rahman’s ideals.

The BNP Secretary General added that his party has been struggling for the past 15 years. Tarique Rahman has been leading this struggle. Through the movement of the people and students, we have been able to defeat the terrible Hasina.

Regarding the upcoming national election, he said, “Looking ahead to the February 2026 election, BNP is already cooperating. We view positively the proposal for reform of the Election Commission. At the same time, we want to bring about fundamental change in the country’s politics through the implementation of BNP’s 31-point agenda.”

Mirza Fakhrul expressed hope that if BNP can come to power with the people’s mandate, then under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, there will be political reform on one hand and new momentum in the economy on the other.

Instead of a rally, BNP to clean canals and drains on Tuesday: The party’s Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced on Monday that on the occasion of its founding anniversary, the BNP will clean canals and drains in Dhaka on Tuesday instead of holding a rally.

He said the party decided to shun rally programme to avoid people’s sufferings.

He said, “There have been some changes in our programs. In particular, tomorrow (Tuesday) the rally program in Dhaka has been canceled, and BNP North and BNP South will conduct cleaning operations in their respective areas, covering canals and drains.”

Rizvi said, “When rallies are held, the entire city becomes paralyzed. People suffer immense hardship. Considering this suffering, we have canceled tomorrow’s rally program. Instead, canals, rivers, and drains will now be cleaned.”
