State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu today said that the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) would start selling onion imported from India at Taka 40 per kg from tomorrow.

In its first consignment, some 1,650 metric tons of onion has already arrived in the country from India. The TCB will sell such onion at Dhaka, Chattogram and in Gazipur at Taka 40 per kg.

Talking to BSS today, Commerce Ministry Senior Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh said that the first consignment out of 50,000 metric tons of onion has already arrived in the country from India while the sale of this onion would start from tomorrow.

“Although India has currently halted its export of onion, but it has agreed to export 50,000 metric tons of onion to Bangladesh upon our request. The first consignment of 1,650 metric tons of onion has already arrived in Bangladesh. Since onion is a perishable item, the timeframe for importing its next consignment will be determined after looking into its quality,” he added.

Earlier on Sunday, the State Minister informed that the imported onion from India would be sold at Dhaka and Chattogram at Taka 40 per kg.

He also hoped that under such initiative, the price of onion would come down at Taka 40 per kg in at least some 30 districts out of 64 districts.

The imported onion from India would be sold at some 103 spots in Dhaka, 55 spots in Chattogram, 17-20 spots in Gazipur simultaneously at Taka 40 per kg. Each truck will contain 10 tons of onion.
