The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan of Police (DMP) has submitted a charge sheet to a court, showing Nurul Haque Nur, former Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) VP and leader of Bangladesh Gono Odhikar Parishad, as a fugitive. This is the first charge sheet that was filed in any of the 20 cases against Nurul Haque Nur.The case was filed over a year and a half ago, under the Digital Security Act (DSA) for allegedly making derogatory comments about Awami League workers and supporters.
The case was filed by musician Elias Hossain, accusing Nur of hurting religious sentiments on April 19, 2021.
The charge sheet states that on April 14, 2021, Nur went live on Facebook and made false, derogatory, and provocative statements against Awami League activists, which hurt religious values and sentiments.
He violated the country’s overall legal framework, created enmity, and hatred, among various communities and classes, and attempted to create unrest in society. Nur has been charged under sections 25, 28, 29, 31 of the DSA.
However, the offense has not been proven under section 35 of the act. As Nur is on the run, an arrest warrant has been issued against him.
The investigating officer of the case, DB Cyber and Special Crime Division’s Inspector Md Saiful Islam said: “We have found the allegation against Nur to be true. Charges have been filed against him. Soon witnesses will testify against him in the court.”
Regarding the case, Nur said: “These cases are baseless. The government has filed the case as a weapon to suppress the opposition party. Harassment cases will be dealt with legally. It will be seen what happens if the court issues an arrest warrant if it is a real criminal.
About being on the run, he said: “I am in Bangladesh. I am attending meetings and processions regularly. I am not a fugitive. The government has to quit before the charges are filed in this case.”
The plaintiff of the case, Elias Hossain said: “VP Nur has made several statements that insulted the Awami League. I filed the case as a supporter of the Awami League. The police have found the truth of the allegations against him after the investigation. I hope the trial of this case ends quickly and he gets punished.”
