Staff Correspondent : Directorate of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) will provide drinking water connection to around 6 lakh of 30 municipalities of the country. Besides, one and a half lakh eco-friendly sewage connections will be provided in these municipalities. Activities are underway to complete this work by 2024. However, about five million residents of those municipalities will be benefitted directly and indirectly from this project. The concerned parties informed this information at the municipal mayors’ workshop organized in a hotel in the capital. The chief guest announced the incentives for the municipality in the meeting. Additional secretary of water supply department of local government department spoke as the chief guest at the workshop. Khairul Islam, additional secy of water resource department of local government department spoke as chief guest in tge workshop. Sarwar Hossain, chief engineer of dphe chaired the program while JasimUddin, joint secretary of the local government department, Additional Chief Engineer of Directorate of Public Health Engineering Tushar Mohan Sadhu Khan and Additional Chief Engineer and Project Director Mir Abdus Sahid and others participated the programs. In the workshop, it was informed by DPHE, under this project, initiatives will be taken to provide clean water, install sewers and treat sewage in an environmentally friendly way. Among those municipalities are Tarabo, Ullapara, Chandanaish, Madhupur, Akhaura, Banshkhali,Bagha, Akkelpur, Panchbibi, Taherpur, Goalando, Banpara, Debidwar, Islampur, Dhanbari, Rangamati, Parashuram, Homna, Bhuapur, Chougacha, Gangni, Baraigram, Baralekha, Senbagh, Raiganj, Nachol, Katakhali, Shivganj, Kamalganj and Kahalu. According to sources, the project entitled “Water supply and sanitation in 30 municipalities in Bangladesh” supported by the joint financial support of the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Under implementation by the directorate, the main objective of the project is to develop water supply, sanitation and drainage systems in the 30 municipalities. At present, the implementation of the project at the municipal level is nearing completion. If the project is implemented, the people of the municipality will get the opportunity to use water directly. This will benefit 6 to 8 lakh people during the project period. Moreover, the sanitation system installed under the project belongs to the municipality. Poor people will have access to sanitary latrines by the municipality. One and a half lakh people will benefitted for that availability.
