Prime minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the much-awaited Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel constructed beneath the Karnaphuli River on October 28 next.
But, the tunnel will open for vehicular movement from October 29, said Bridges Division Secretary Md. Monjur Hossain after the preparatory meeting on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman tunnel opening ceremony held at Chattogram Circuit House here today.
He said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel is a matter of pride not only for Chattogram but for the entire nation.
“We can say that the tunnel has been prepared under the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added.
Terming the tunnel a national resource, Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md Tofail Islam asked all not to spread propaganda regarding the tunnel.
At the preparatory meeting, Project Director Harun-ur-Rashid said the tunnel is ready for vehicular movement.
Former Chattogram City Mayor and general secretary of Chattogram City Awami League AJM Nasir Uddin said a public rally is scheduled to be held at Anwara-point on the day of the inauguration.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will address the rally as the chief guest, he added.
The tunnel will connect the proposed Asian Highway with Dhaka-Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Highway by reducing distance by 40km.
Bangabandhu Tunnel has been built spending Taka 10,374 crore.
