RU Correspondent: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has raided the Rajshahi University (RU) Kamruzzaman Hall on allegations of irregularities in its construction.

They entered the university administration building at 12:30 pm on Sunday (April 21).

According to an official, the ACC has come to inspect the hall based on complaints of irregularities in the construction work.

After entering the administration building, they sat in a meeting at the university registrar’s office. Registrar (Acting) Professor Tariqul Hasan, Director of Planning and Development Department Engineer Khandkar Shahriar Rahman, and Chief Engineer Abul Kalam Azad were present on behalf of the university.

After the meeting, ACC Assistant Director Amir Hossain told reporters that the roof of the auditorium of AHM Kamaruzzaman Hall under construction under the physical infrastructure development project of Rajshahi University collapsed. In this regard, we have come to this operation given the complaints received on the hotline number (106) of the Anti-Corruption Commission. We have inspected the building with an independent engineer to check for any defects in its construction. We have collected some records. Based on the records and the report of our engineers, we will inform the Commission of our decision. Then the Commission will take further action.

He also said, initially it seems to us, that there are some inconsistencies in the construction work. We will also collect the records of other works under construction by the contractor of this building to see if there is any discrepancy in getting their work.

According to university sources, this hall built with an area of 24 thousand square meters will have 10 floors. The building will have three blocks. All the rooms in this hall with about 1000 seats will have two seats. The entire building will have four lifts through which students can move up and down. There will be various facilities for the disabled. This hall is being constructed at a cost of Tk 70 crore 20 lakh under the physical infrastructure development project of the university. The contractor company Majid Sons Construction is doing the construction of this hall.

It is noted that, on January 30, a part of the under-construction Shahid AHM Kamaruzzaman Hall of Rajshahi University collapsed. 9 construction workers were injured. After that, the university administration called an emergency meeting and formed a three-member investigation committee to determine the cause of the incident. At that time, if irregularities were found in the construction of the building after investigation, the university administration warned to take strict action.

Incidentally, the pillowcase of the Rooppur nuclear power plant project was highly discussed by three contracting companies. One of them is ‘Majid Sons Construction Limited’. After the pillow incident, the roof of the under-construction building of Rajshahi University collapsed in the discussion again.
