E lection Commission upholds Shahjahan Omar’s candidacy

ET Desk: The Election Commission on Friday announced that the candidacy of Shahjahan Omar, a former BNP leader running in the national election with the Awami League ticket from Jhalakathi-1, to remain valid.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal announced this after hearing the appeal petition at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon on Friday.

Awami League central leader Muniruzzaman Munir filed an appeal with the High Court seeking the cancellation of Shahjahan Omar’s candidature for concealing information in his affidavit.

The EC rejected his application after the hearing.

Meanwhile, the EC has cancelled the candidacy of Awami League aspirant Salahuddin Ahmed in Cox’s Bazar-1 constituency. Rejecting his application for the seat, the returning officer’s order regarding cancellation of candidacy has been upheld.

Earlier, the returning officer of Cox’s Bazar declared his nomination paper invalid after scrutinizing his nomination paper on December 3 morning due to loan default.
