Beijing has requested Dhaka to strengthen its food-safety regulations for ensuring that the food items exported from Bangladesh to China are safe, sources said.The General Administration of Customs China (GACC) has written to the Bangladesh mission in China regarding the issue.The Bangladesh embassy has recently requested the Ministry of Commerce to take required steps in this connection.China has appreciated Bangladesh’s cooperation in implementing different preventive rules since outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.China has lifted the coronavirus detection and disinfection measures for imported cold-chain food items, which will make customs clearance process easier, according to the embassy letter.The country has mentioned that coronavirus infection is still prevalent in the world. Avian flu, foot-and-mouth disease, and African swine fever also occur occasionally.China has asked to fulfill regulatory responsibilities by the local food enterprises for ensuring safety of the food items exported to the country, and promote trade development.It believes that joint efforts can maintain stability of the international food industry and supply chain system, and make new contributions to ensure safety and smooth operation of the international food trade. “Chinese customs is willing to further strengthen communication and cooperation with your side, and work together to enhance the food safety supervision cooperation,” according to the letter.
It also believes that the measures have safeguarded confidence of the Chinese consumers to a great extent, and maintained development of the cold chain food trade.
The bilateral trade between Bangladesh and China increased significantly in 2021, exceeding US$ 25 billion.
