Staff Correspondent
Brigadier General Md Main Uddin, director general of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, on Monday claimed that the blast, which took place at “Shirin Mansion” in the Science Lab area of the capital, was due to an accumulated gas explosion. Claiming the blast a big accident, Main Uddin said: “It is being investigated whether the explosion happened due to any other reason. So far, no signs of sabotage have been found. Therefore, we are thinking that this accident may have happened due to the explosion of gas accumulated for a long time.”He made these remarks while talking to reporters after the opening ceremony of the Pallabi Fire Station inside Mirpur DOHS in the capital.“I sought the help of the army to find out whether the explosion of the Science Lab was an accident or due to some other reason. Their bomb disposal team confirmed that there was no signs of sabotage nor any explosives,” he said.
Brigadier General Main Uddin, when asked about the role of the fire service in moving chemical godowns and factories after the fire incidents in Nimtoli and Churihatta in old Dhaka, said: “The government has taken the initiative to move chemical godowns. No NOC or permission is being given in Old Dhaka for setting up chemical godowns or factories. What is still going on there is completely illegal. The work of the fire service is to investigate and submit a report to the ministry.”
Stating the fire service always stands by the side of general people in danger, the DG said the fire service has left a mark of success abroad as well with its modern equipment.
“Our fire service also contributed to the rescue operation in Turkey after the earthquake. Each of our firefighters is trained and they are being made more skilled and trained. We are also training the volunteers for better service,” he said.
At least three people were killed and dozens were injured in the explosion in Dhaka’s Science Lab area on Sunday morning.
The incident, which took place at around 10:52am, left part of the three-story “Shirin Mansion” partially collapsed.
The bodies of the three victims who were killed in the explosion that took place on the third floor of a building named “Shirin Mansion” in Dhaka’s Science Lab area have been handed over to their families on Monday morning.
The bodies were handed over after completing autopsies at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
