RU Representative: The 57th anniversary of the death of the Language Movement organizer and Rajshahi University founder Madar Bux on Today, Saturday. Madar Bux was the most respected personality of the people of Rajshahi. He was a proud social worker and one of the pioneers of North Bengal education. This accomplished man passed away on January 20, 1967.
He was born on February 14, 1907, at a place called Esthapandighi of Singra Thana, Nator Mahakumar (now District) of Rajshahi District.

With the promise of ‘Education is the backbone of the nation’, Madar Bux has lit the light on education among the neglected and deprived backward people of North Bengal. Addressing a public meeting at Bhuban Mohan Park on 6 February 1953, Madar Bux warned the government, ‘If a university is not established in Rajshahi, we will be forced to demand an independent province for North Bengal.’
Madar Bux’s statement received a response in the country, The government was also shaken Finally on March 31, 1953, the Provincial Legislature passed the Rajshahi University Establishment Act. Rajshahi University started its journey on July 6 of that year due to his dedicated efforts and determination to get rights. Not only Rajshahi University, he also built several educational institutions in Rajshahi.
Rajshahi Court Academy ( in 1954 as Sobhaniya High School) was founded by him. Lakshmipur High Girls School was established in 1960 with the efforts of Madar Bux. Rajshahi Muslim High School was established after the partition of the country in 1947. He had a leading role in establishing that school. Rajshahi Homeopathic Medical College established in 1967 was also established with his contribution.
Educationist Madar Bux proposed to establish a medical educational institution in Rajshahi. As a result, a private medical school was established in Rajshahi in 1949 to provide medical services. This medical school was taken over by the government in 1955. Then in 1958, the medical school was converted into Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.
Apart from education, he has also made a unique contribution to social service. Madar Bux served as the elected chairman of Rajshahi Municipality from 19 September 1950 to 22 June 1954. During his tenure, great progress was made in the then-Rajshahi municipal area. He earned the immense love of the people through his balanced development activities. He is the architect of Rajshahi New Market.
In 1946, he was elected member of the Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Atrai, Bagmara, and Manda thana constituencies. Even after the creation of Pakistan in 1947, he was a member of the East Bengal Legislative Assembly till 1954. At that time, the government began to treat the people of the northern region with extreme discrimination and neglect. Madar Bux played a protest role in this protest.
He joined the Muslim League to eradicate the social, political, and economic crisis of that time with honesty, devotion, talent, and talent. This great man, who was always vocal against injustice, was able to fill the void after the death of an eminent politician, social worker Haji Lal Mohammad Sardar, and jurist Khan Bahadur Emaduddin. He became one of the policymakers of the Muslim League due to his ability and skill.
He has left an important and outstanding contribution to national life through tireless labor, pursuit, and aspiration. Madar Bux had a great role during the language movement as well. He warned against the then-ruling government and said, “If Bengali language is not given the status of the state language, then I will resign from the membership of the Legislative Council.”
Madar Bux, who has a noble and philanthropic soul, will always be remembered by the people of the Rajshahi region. Known as the father of education and public welfare, Madar Bux has enlightened the people of this region through her lifelong efforts and sacrifices.
