RU Correspondent:

Rajshahi University Islamic Studies Department teacher Hafizur Rahman has been suspended from academic activities for five years after allegations of forcing female students to remove hijab-niqab in the classroom and sending ‘unpleasant messages’ to girls students on messenger.

The academic committee of the department took this decision in an academic meeting on Tuesday (March 12). After the meeting, the department chairman Md. Ashraf Uz Zaman told this information.

“The academic committee meeting was held on Tuesday based on the students’ complaints. Associate Professor Hafizur Rahman has been exempted from academic activities for five years based on the decision of the committee members after scrutinizing the complaints in the meeting. As the teacher accepted the complaint, no inquiry committee was formed. As a result, the exemption will be effective from today,” he said.

According to university sources, on Monday afternoon, the students of the Islamic Studies Department protested a human chain in front of the central library of the university.

In addition, Professor Hafizur Rahman also harassed some students by sending ‘unpleasant messages’ on Messenger. They then demanded that the teacher be exempted from teaching and exemplary punishment. At the same time, the students complained about this to the chairman of the department.

Meanwhile, students declared Hafizur Rahman unwelcome on the campus from the human chain program on Paris Road in front of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Senate building of the university at 10 am. Student organizations in the university organized the program in the ‘Student Rights Association’. They also demanded that the teacher be exempted from classes and exams and expelled from the university.
